Starting in September 2007, the School of Biology of the University of Edinburgh will be offering a one year, full-time, taught MSc/Diploma course in Bioinformatics.

The course has been developed in a collaboration between the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Informatics to offer leading-edge training in both the core principles underpinning bioinformatic science, and the applications of this science to real biological data and problems.

Our aim is to offer students a choice from a portfolio of courses that will allow you to develop skills in a wide range of bioinformatic methods and applications, including:

programming and developing applications in Java

programming in the "Bio"-varieties of the common programming languages

using core bioinformatics tools (BLAST, Hidden Markov Models) as an expert

developing and implementing a bioinformatics research project

building and maintaining bioinformatics databases

biological and bioinformatic statistics

evolutionary and population genetics

structural bioinformatics

phylogenetic inference
