Accepted Gene Names for Filarial Nematodes
Release 1: 1st Nov 1997 Please note: the table is still incomplete: we are working to add gene names and identifiers to it. Please do contact us if something (ie your favourite gene) is missing!
This table lists the currently accepted gene names (three-letter designations) for genes from filarial nematodes. This naming scheme was described in Parasitology Today (Nov 1997), and is based directly on those developed for Caenorhabditis elegans [Horvitz, H.R., et al. (1979) A uniform genetic nomenclature for the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Mol. Gen. Genet. 175, 129-133] and plant parasitic nematodes [Bird, D.M. and D.L. Riddle (1994) A genetic nomenclature for parasitic nematodes. J. Nematol. 26, 138-143]. We encourage all filarial researchers to use these designations, to reduce confusion and complexity. If you would like to propose a new gene name, or be allocated a new number form an existing named gene set, please contact FUNK by email or phone (Mark Blaxter, phone +44 131 650 6760, email: mark.blaxter@ed.ac.uk).
We are working hard on the production of a public release of a non-redundant gene sequence dataset from the over 11,000 ESTs generated by the Brugia Genome Project, and the thousands available for Onchocerca volvulus. These "CLUSTERS" will allow researchers to uniquely refer to all ESTs which derive from a single gene, and should reduce confusion in reporting of experimental results (see Parasitology Today article for rationale).
The gene names are linked to listings of the current gene name-number combinations allocated. The Nomenklature Kontroller is the person or group who will hand out numbers in order: you should contact them (or FUNK directly) if you wish to add genes to the set.
