The mitochondrial genome

The Brugia Malayi Mitochodrion

Hanan Helmy, Mark Blaxter, 21/4/1999

We have identified Brugia malayi EST clusters that correspond to the genes identified in the Onchocerca volvulus mitochondrial genome by Tom Unnasch's lab. We are currently proceeding to isolate and sequence the entire Brugia mitochondrial genome (J. Mudge and M. Blaxter, in process...) and this sequence will be used subsequently to definitively identify the Brugia mt gene ESTs. Some of the mt genes appear to be represented by more than one (usually non-overlapping ) cluster. Following the FUNK guidelines, these genes have been designated with the lowest-numbered cluster.
