NEWS: Brugia malayi genome sequence paper published in Science
In collaboration with Elodie Ghedin of TIGR/Philadelphia and many others in the Filarial Genome Network, we have participated in the sequencing and annotation of a draft genome sequence of Brugia malayi, one of the causative agents of elephantiasis.
NEMBASE3 released
The latest release of our Nematode EST Analysis Resource, NEMBASE3, is now live. The new version of this key database includes robust protein predictions (NemPep3), protein families (NemFam3) and novel domain predictions (NemDom3) for 37 species and over 150,000 proteins.
NEMBASE3 is available at http://www.nematodes.org/nembase3/
NemBase3 was built by Ralf Schmid and Ann Hedley; NemPep3, NemFam3 and NemDom3 were built by James Wasmuth; the web interface was engineered by Ann Hedley

The Blaxter lab at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Edinburgh uses genomics tools to investigate the diversity and evolutionary history of a wide range of animals. Our main taxonomic group of interest is the nematodes, or roundworms (particularly the parasites of humans and animals), but we also work on other "worms" (flatworms, earthworms), molluscs, arthropods (insects, crabs, spiders and so on) and tardigrades (or water bears).
Our main tools are DNA sequence (generated from DNA barcoding programmes, expressed sequence tag projects and genome sequencing projects), bioinformatics tools (to organise and analyse these large datasets) and phylogenetics (to analyse the datasets for phylogenetic information). We collaborate with a wide range of biologists in Edinburgh and beyond on topics related to the core work, including ecotoxicogenomics (the genome responses of animals in the wild to pollutants), structure-function analysis of novel protein families, biodiversity assessment using DNA markers, and the evolution of development.
