H. polygyrus is a very useful intestinal nematode parasite model. It has been in lab culture for many years, and current taxonomic thinking suggests that UK and US 'versions" of this nematode may be distinct species. At worst/best they are subspecies, and the current convention is to call the lab strain "Heligmosoides polygyrus bakeri".
