Informatics and the analysis of the genome sequence

The C. elegans genome was sequenced in two centres (The Sanger Centre and the Washington University Genome Sequencing Center). As this was the first genome of any animal to be sequenced, the teams had to invent methods for annotating the genome, essentially fromn scratch. Sharing data and tools between the two sites was both essential and productive (in that a friendly rivalry led each team to try to better the other). The final annotation is the product of many overlapping tools and methods, and is still ongoing. An important tool was the shared genome database ACeDB.
